    Claire

I started having jaw and facial pain about four years ago at the age of twenty- three.  I waited for two years before seeking the advice of an orthodontist.  Upon evaluation, he determined I needed braces and oral surgery to improve my overbite and shorten my upper jaw.  I was desperate for relief, so I agreed.  I had the surgery two years ago, and it was a horrible recovery process.  After the surgery I felt some relief.  However, 9 months later, my pain returned, and my jaw function was minimal.  I suffered with this pain with constant thoughts of suicide, until my family doctor prescribed narcotics to temporarily ease the pain and referred me to a TMJ clinic.  The team of specialists gave me hope.  They understand my pain and have individualized my treatment.  For the first time in four years, I can actually see the light at the end of the pain tunnel. Although it will be a long process, I have learned that I can’t look back in regret, but only forward in hope.
